When you are designing rooms for your new home you may be thinking of the big items that have to be put in, but you should also keep in mind that many of the accent pieces that really should go in at the beginning are just as important to the overall image of this space.
In this article we are going to take a look at some of the considerations that should be made when you are designing a new bathroom for your home.
The Shower and Bath
The biggest part of any bathroom is the shower or bath area. Therefore, you should probably put the most thought into this space.
First how comfortable do you want your shower or bath to be? While we know this is an area for getting clean, there are also shower accessories you can choose that will help you do this. For example, you may want shower caddies or bath caddies to be able to put all of those soaps and shampoos in. While some of these are aftermarket purchases that can be hung in the shower after the bathroom is done, other shower baskets are meant to be installed into the shower as it is being built. If you want one of these types you need to know this up front and have it installed.
When it comes to bath hardware for the shower, you are going to be thinking of things like shower rods, shower curtains, shower curtain hooks and shower curtain rings.
Sure, these are mostly things you can put in after the bathroom is finished, sometimes you don't want to wait, and you probably want to have the mountings for the rod put in advance.
After all, the curtain design and the other accents to it that you choose are going to be a major focal point for this room and help determine the overall look of the space.
Finally, you should think about safety. Do you have someone in the family who is a little older and could use a little support or extra help getting in and out of the shower or bath? Grab bars may offer them the stability they need.
Beside the Bath or Shower
Next you have to think of the things that are going to be helping out the bath or shower. In this case we are talking about things like towel racks and towel bars.
There is nothing more frustrating than getting done with your shower or bath and realizing there are no towels nearby. This is why you may want to even consider double towel bars near the tub or shower to make sure there are always enough towels on hand. If you don't like racks you can consider having towel hooks, towel rings or even robe hooks installed.
If you don’t have a good hunk of wall to attach bars beside the shower or bath, you can always choose to go with towel stands instead. These are free standing items that will hold the towels near you as you get out of the shower. If you really want to treat yourself you may look for ones that are also towel warmers and make you feel like you just left the spa every time you get out of the tub.
The Toilet Area
When it comes to choosing a toilet and the things that go around it, a lot of people don't think much about it. Perhaps that's because they really don't want to put too much thought into what happens in this space, but you still should make sure it has the look and feel you want for the bathroom.
When it comes to the toilet itself, choose one that fits the space and make sure to look at all the details, even down to the tank levers, as they are a part of the overall look and style.
Now let's look at things you are going to need around the toilet. You are going to definitely want toilet paper holders, as there is not much worse than being caught with your pants down, literally, with no paper. You also may want to have bathroom shelves here to hold extra toilet paper so no one runs out.
Also consider that for some people, being here is going to take a little more time. You may want to have magazine racks nearby just in case they need a little recreational reading.
The next thing you need to consider is that from time that toilet is going to need a good cleaning and that means a toilet brush needs to be within reach. Instead of showing off this unattractive necessity, you may want to invest in toilet brush holders to hide them away but keep them nearby.
The Sink
When it comes to the sink area of your bathroom there are a lot of things to think about. How much thought have you put into the bathroom hardware you are going to use? Your bathroom faucets are going to say a lot about this space and be a part of defining the theme.
You also need good bathroom mirrors around the sink. This is a space where people get ready for the work day or to go out for a night on the town and they need to be able to clearly see what they are doing as they do makeup, hair and the like. You may want to have vanity trays just below those mirrors as a place to hold all of the things they are going to use to get ready. What you need to decide now is if you want these to be things you put in after the bathroom is done or to be installed as a part of the construction.
Now let's look at bathroom accessories that you may need around the sink. You will need to invest in soap dishes or soap dispensers as well as glass holders and possibly paper towel holders. While some versions of these things can be easily added to the bathroom after it is done, others are easier installed before all of the construction has been completed. Choose which ones you want now so you know when they need to be put in.
Lights
How much thought have you put into the lights in your new bathroom to be? Well you know you need enough lighting to see your way around, but before you sign off on everything, maybe you want to take a little look into sconce lighting on one or more of the walls. This can create a very warm atmosphere in the room. Another thing you want to think about is vanity lighting so the person getting ready can see clearly.
Final Details
Before you completely finish up the bathroom design make sure you have thought of the little details like wall flanges. These are the pieces of metal that cover the space where the pipes from your sink, toilet, etc go into the wall. You definitely want these so you don't see a bunch of cut up pieces of wall with pipes sticking out of them. You can also take this to the next level, considering the theme of your bathroom and adding flanges that are of the right color and even design to dress things up.
